Am yet to find a decent toolbar that works as well as it is hyped-up to do.

    *Free AV (anti-virus) – AVG….better than many paid-for AV’s
*Free spyware/malware – Ewido. Comes as a 30day trial, but the key features work as norm after trial expires – inexpensive anyhow if you wish to buy… is the best I’ve encountered thus far
    – AdAwareSE is the next best thing – "personal" version is free
*Pop-up solutions – use either Firefox 2.0 or Opera and most pop-ups cease to appear :)

All Toolbar based computer security apps are a joke. They are just a teaser to entice you to download some sort of toolbar. They do not provide good protection.

For some good and free A-S and A-V apps have a look below.

    For your anti-spyware needs:
    Here you are:

Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

    Spybot Search and Destroy:

    Ewido:

    Adaware SE:

    A-Squared:

    Windows Defender (Beta 2):

    ………………………………………………………..

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

    ………………………………………………….

And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:

    SpywareBlaster:

    SiteAdvisor:

    …………………………..

    For your anti-virus needs:

Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:

    Avast:
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

    Anti-Vir:
    http://www.free-av.com/

    AOL AntiVirusShield:

    AVG:

    BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)

Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)

All are fairly mediocre compared to some of the top rated (paid) anti-virus programs such as Kaspersky (KAV) or Eset NOD-32. But you can’t beat the price.
