    This woman defies description. She was one of the first who really made the singer an integral, yet autonomous member of the band, she was the one who walked away from the ball gowns and stiff, statue-like delivery of most female jazz singers. Her tones, scat and phrasing are incomparable, and priceless. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. She and Billie Holliday are on another plane, to this day. Death, to talents like Anita and Billie, is a trivial thing.

    @uncromulent After seeing and hearing such an amazing performance, is it really worth mentioning something that may bring a negative connotation to a woman so great? It seems like some people remember the fact that she used a plant substance, more than remembering her for her outstanding performances. Some may try to hold her to a perfect standard after such a perfect performance, but like the rest of us she was only human. I believe that after 50+ years, that we can forgive her and let it go.
